The Saint Peter's College baseball team defeated Niagara University 8-6 Sunday afternoon. After briefly trailing 5-4 for an inning, the Peacocks were able to out-score the hosts 4-1 in the last four innings to secure the victory. Matt Mancini went 6.0 innings and gave up 8 hits, 6 runs (1 earned) and 2 walks while striking out 4 to receive the victory.
Nick Henriquez led off the fourth inning with a double to center and scored on a two base hit by Patt Farrell in the next at bat to put SPC in front 1-0. Two batters later, with runners at second and first, Russ Stupienski would single in Farrell (2-0) and advance Justin Carter to third. Chris Grimes followed with a run scoring double down the left field line to bring home Carter, while an RBI groundout by Brian Schroeder made the score 4-0.
Niagara responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning and proceeded to add two more in the fifth for a 5-4 advantage. Saint Peter's rallied back with three runs in the sixth on four hits. With one out and runners on first and second, Matt Speckmann doubled to left field, scoring Preston Aldridge and tying the score at 5-5. After the second pitching change of the frame, Stupienski again came through for SPC, with a base-hit to left to bring home Farrell for the go-ahead run. Chris Grimes grounded into a fielder's choice to score Speckmann for the third run of the inning.
The Purple Eagles came within one run after scoring one in the bottom of the seventh, but the Peacocks added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI double by Stupienski to score Carter who walked earlier in the inning.
Dom Macaluso pitched three innings of relief to be credited with his seventh save of the season.
Saint Peter's out-hit the Purple Eagles by a 12-9 margin, while recording three errors in the contest. Russ Stupienski finished 3-5 with 3 RBI and 1 run, while Pat Farrell went 3-4 with 1 RBI and 2 runs. Preston Aldridge also finished with a multi-hit game, going 2-5 and scoring a run.
The Peacocks return to action next weekend for a three-game series against Manhattan in Van Cortland Park, NY starting Saturday May 12th at 12pm.
