Unable to obtain a lead for the entirety of the contest, the Saint Peter's College baseball team dropped an 8-4 decision to Rider University this afternoon. The Peacocks were able to tie the score on two separate occasions, but the Broncs erupted for six runs in the last four innings to lead by as many as six markers. Matt Mancini went 6.2 innings and gave up 4 hits, 2 walks and 2 earned runs to be credited with the loss.
After trailing 1-0 for the first two and a half innings, Saint Peter's registered their first run of the game on an RBI single by Justyn Carter up the middle to score Alberto Rodriguez from second, who reached base on a Broncs' error. Rider reestablished their advantage in the next frame, but a solo home run by Russ Stupienski to right field in the fifth evened the score again.
The visitors proceeded to score one run in the sixth, one in the seventh and four in the eighth to jump in front 8-2. Anthony DeLeo gave up three earned runs in two/thirds of an inning, while Dom Macaluso gave up one in 1.2 innings pitched.
An RBI single by Russ Stupienski in the eighth scored Chris Grimes to trim Rider's lead to five, while an RBI double to right field by Brian Schroeder bringing home Pat Farrell in the ninth accounted for SPC's last run.
The Broncs out-hit Saint Peter's by a 13-6 margin, while SPC committed 3 errors in the contest. Four of SPC's six hits came in the last two innings.
Stupienski lead the Peacocks from the plate, going 2-3 with 2 RBI and 1 run.
Saint Peter's returns to action this Tuesday, May 1st for a non-conference match up against Seton Hall University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
