Recap:
The Saint Peter's College (13-24) baseball team dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Army (29-9) this afternoon. The Peacocks led 2-1 after five innings of play but the Black Knights came back to score four in the sixth, and added the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Ethan Jackson pitched three innings in relief and gave up two hits and the game-winning run to receive the loss.
Although Army scored first and established a one-run lead in the second, the Peacocks responded by scoring two runs in the fourth off an RBI double by Preston Aldridge and an RBI single by Matt Mancini.
The Black Knights quickly regained their lead, scoring four markers in the sixth to go ahead 5-2. Saint Peter's again showed their resilience however, adding two runs in the eighth on two hits and a Black Knight error. After reaching first on a miscue by Army's first basemen, Brian Koster would later advance to second after Brian Schroeder grounded out to third. A second ground out, this time by Smith, put Koster at third, setting the stage for Preston Aldridge to bring him home with a triple to left center field. Aldridge scored in the following at bat, after Mancini recorded a base-hit to center.
With two on and no outs in the top of the ninth, Nick Henriquez came through with a game-tying base-hit down the right field line to score Matt Speckmann who doubled on earlier in the inning. Despite having four hits in the inning, that would be the only Peacock run.
Army started off the bottom of the ninth with a double down the left field line by Cody Murtle who later scored on a bunt single by Patrick Mescher.
Dom Macaluso started the game for the Peacocks and went 5 innings, allowing just 1 hit and 1 earned run while striking out 2. Preston Aldridge and Matt Mancini both finished 2-3 with a walk and 2 RBI. Nick Henriquez (2-4, 1 RBI) and Zack Rawson (2-5) also finished with multi-hit games.
Saint Peter's returns to action this weekend for a three-game series against Siena starting Saturday, April 21st at 12pm in Loudonville, NY.
