Recap:
The Saint Peter's College (8-18, 0-1 MAAC) baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Fairfield University (10-15, 2-2 MAAC) Friday afternoon, snapping the Peacock's three-game winning streak. The Peacocks held on to a slim one-run lead heading into the sixth, until the Stags exploded for five runs to take a 6-2 advantage. Saint Peter's managed to score two markers in the ninth to get within one, but fell short in their comeback. Zach Hopf pitched 5 innings plus and gave up 6 earned runs on 6 hits, while striking out three to receive the loss.
Although the Stags jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Peacocks were able to tie the score at 1-1 after a sacrifice fly by Brian Koster brought home Justyn Carter. SPC established their first lead of the game two innings later as William Rawson's RBI double scored Koster, who led off the frame with a two-bagger down the left field line.
Saint Peter's maintained the lead until the top of the sixth, when the Stags struck for five runs on four hits to jump in front 6-2.
A solo homerun by Chris Grimes, his third of the season, in the bottom of the seventh brought the Peacocks within three runs at 6-3.
England's squad managed to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth with no outs, to force a pitching change by Fairfield. An RBI groundout by Rawson in the next at bat scored Grimes, advancing Mike Scicutella and Brian Koster and second and third, respectively. A second RBI groundout, this time by Pat Farrell, accounted for the second SPC run of the inning. Matt Speckmann would ground out to first however, to end the stanza with the final score of 6-5.
Mark Wilson pitched four shutout innings in relief to keep the Peacocks in the game after entering in the fifth.
Saint Peter's left 12 runners on base, twice as many as Fairfield (6), while being out-hit by a narrow 9-8 margin. SPC also committed 2 errors in the contest.
Brian Koster went a perfect 3-3 (2 walks) with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Matt Mancini also had a multi-hit game, finishing 2-4 from the plate. Chris Grimes, who went 1-2, was walked twice and scored 2 runs along with recording a RBI.
The Peacocks return to action this Sunday, April 1st, as they wrap up their first MAAC series of the season with a double-header against the Stags. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 12pm.
