Women's Basketball Drops 72-59 Decision To Manhattan

Failing to attain a lead for the entirety of the game, the Saint Peter's College women's basketball team was defeated by the Manhattan Jaspers, 72-59, in Riverdale, NY. Kristal Edwards finished with her second double-double of the season (13 points, 10 rebounds) to lead the Peahens. Saint Peter's is now 3-24, 3-13 MAAC on the year, while Manhattan improves to 15-13, 9-7 MAAC.

The Peahens were held scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of the opening frame, until a two-pointer by Judson made the score 4-2 in the Jaspers' favor. Saint Peter's got within two at 10-8 following five consecutive points from Kristal Edwards, but Manhattan responded with an 11-2 run to go ahead 21-10 at 7:58.

Following a thirty second timeout by DeWolfe, Edwards would drain a fifteen-foot jump-shot to cut the deficit to single digits. On the next possession however, Manhattan's Alyssa Herrington sank a trey from the left wing to regain a twelve-point cushion at 24-12.

The Peahens failed to get within single digits for the remainder of the stanza, while Manhattan established their largest lead at 43-24 (19 points) with 5 seconds remaining. Antonia Smith connected on a long distance three at the buzzer to make the score 43-27 heading into the half-time break.

Kristal Edwards led the Peahens in scoring in the first half with 9 points on 4-7 shooting and grabbed 5 rebounds. The Peahens shot 37.9% from the floor and 50% from three-point range. Lindsey Loutsenhizer finished the frame with 11 points to lead the Jaspers, who shot 56.7% (33.3% 3FG) as a team.

The Peahens outscored the Jaspers 32-29 in the second stanza, but again failed to get within single digits. Manhattan reached their largest lead of the game, 23 points (53-30) at the 15:41 minute mark. 

Saint Peter's did threaten to comeback, as they cut the Jaspers' lead to 13 (59-46) with over six minutes to play, following a made free-throw by Aziza May. Manhattan answered back with a 6-0 run however, to regain a 19-point advantage. 

Kaydine Bent also finished in double-figures for Saint Peter's adding 10 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. Jynae Judson was held to 9 points (3-8) and added 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Edwards' 13 rebounds were a game-high.

The Jaspers had three players in double figures: Schyanne Halfkenny (19 points), Nadia Peters (18 points) and Lindsey Loutsenhizer (11 points).

Overall, Saint Peter's shot 37.9% and 27.3% from three point range, while Manhattan shot 49.2% and 23.5%, respectively. SPC won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Jaspers 43-30. The Peahens committed 24 turnovers in the contest to the Jaspers' 14.

The Peahens return to action on Friday February 24th when they host Rider University for their last home game of the season on Senior Day. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30pm.
