Women's Basketball Downed By Manhattan

Held to their second-lowest point total of the season, the Saint Peter's College women's basketball team fell 62-36 to the Manhattan College Jaspers Sunday afternoon. The Peahens never held a lead in the contest, while the Jaspers established their largest lead (26 points) in the last six seconds. Quiana Porter recorded her third double-double of the season, finishing with team-highs in both points (11) and rebounds (13). With the loss, the Peahens fall to 2-18, 2-7 MAAC, while Manhattan improves to 10-11, 4-6 MAAC.
 

The Jaspers jumped out to a 7-0 advantage in the first three minutes of the half, forcing Head Coach Stephanie DeWolfe to burn a time-out early on. The Peahens broke the Jaspers' run with a layup by Aminah Davis at 17:01.

 

Saint Peter's struggled offensively in the first half of the frame, as they only recorded one field goal and trailed 13-2 going into the under-twelve media timeout. Jesika Holmes scored the team's second field goal (2-13 fg-fga) following the time-out to make the score 13-4 at 11:24.

 

Holmes brought Saint Peter's within six at 14-8, after connecting on consecutive two-pointers. The senior forward accounted for six of the eight Peahen's points. SPC managed to get within five points on three separate occasions, but the Jaspers concluded the first half with a 7-0 run to go into the break ahead 27-15.

 

For the half, Saint Peter's shot just 20% from the floor (6-30, 0-0 from 3-pt range) while Manhattan shot 34.6% (22.2% 3-pt range). Jesika Holmes led Saint Peter's with 10 points in 12 minutes off the bench, while the Jaspers were led by Monica Roeder's 7 points.

 

Although the Peahens started off the second half with back-to-back buckets by Quiana Porter, the Jaspers were able to create 8-0 run minutes later to establish a 37-21 lead.

 

Porter would break the run with a jumper at 14:56, but Manhattan proceeded to forge forward and go on yet another 7-0 run and form a 19-point cushion (44-25). 

 

The Peahens scored just 13 points in the final fifteen minutes of the stanza, allowing Manhattan to conclude the game on a 9-0 run.

 

SPC was led by Quiana Porter's 11 points, while her 13 rebounds were a game-high. Jesika Holmes finished second on the team in scoring with 10 points, all which were scored in the first half.

 

Manhattan had three players in double-figures; Monica Roeder who had a game-high 13 points, Scyanne Halfkenny (12 points) and Lindsey Loutsenhizer (10 points).

 
Overall, SPC shot 28.1% from the field and 8.3% from beyond the arc, while the Jaspers shot 35.0% and 33.3%, respectively. Saint Peter's scored 26 of their 36 points in the paint, while Manhattan scored 24. The SPC bench also accounted for 22 of their total points.
 

Saint Peter's returns to action on February 2nd, as they look to avenge their 61-52 loss from earlier in the month against the Niagara University Purple Eagles. Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm.
