Women's Basketball Falls to Monmouth on the Road

The Saint Peter's College women's basketball team dropped a 73-64 decision to the Monmouth Hawks Saturday afternoon in West Long Branch, NJ. The Peahens managed to tie the score four times, but held just one lead, in the first fifty-six seconds of the game. For the third consecutive game, Jynae Judson led SPC in scoring, with 12 points. With the loss, the Peahens fall to 0-7, while Monmouth improves to 3-6.

The Peahens got on the board first, as Quiana Porter made her first field goal attempt of the game, but Monmouth quickly answered by forming a 7-0 run. Coach DeWolfe would be forced to call a 30 second timeout just two minutes in, that her team responded to as Aziza May connected on a 15 foot jump shot to make the score 7-4 in the Hawk's favor. Alexis Canady accounted for 5 of Monmouth's first 9 points.

Over the following six minutes, Monmouth established a 16-7 advantage over the visiting Peahens. Saint Peter's chipped away at the lead, and soon found themselves within one point (16-15) as Khadijah Young sank a three off the feed from May with 9:08 to go.

Young and Kaydine Bent teamed up for the next 10 SPC points, with Young draining the equalizer from beyond the arc to tie the game at 22-22 with 7:33 to go in the half.

Both squads entered a scoring drought in the following two and half minutes until Monmouth's Gena Broadus scored a layup at 5:02, to give Monmouth back the lead. Saint Peter's would again tie the game at 26-26 on Judson's two-pointer, until the Hawks put together a 5-0 run to go ahead 31-26. The Peahens responded with their own 4-0 run to close out the first half at 31-30.

Monmouth came out of the half-time break determined, outscoring the Peahens by a 9-2 margin, less than two minutes in. Again Saint Peter's fought back, cutting the Hawk's advantage to 39-38.

Carly Thibault would give Monmouth their first double-digit lead of the game (48-38) at the 14:41 mark, after going 2-2 from the charity stripe.

For the third time in the contest, the Peahens battled back with a 9-2 run, fueled by 6 points from Jynae Judson to again get within 1 point at 50-49. That would be the closest Saint Peter's got, as they were outscored 23-15 for the remainder of the contest.

The Peahens shot a season-best 37.1% from the field, while going 30.8% from three-point range. The Hawks finished the game shooting 39.3%, 26.3% from beyond the arc.

Judson finished the game with 12 points, 5 assists and 4 steals, while Aziza May contributed 11 points and 6 assists. Quiana Porter and Kaydine Bent both came off the bench to score 9 points, while Edwards had 8.

Monmouth had two players with double-doubles; Abby Martin (21 points, 12 rebounds) and Alexis Canady (16 points, 12 rebounds).
