Saint Peter’s Struggles At Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's volleyball team (5-14, 0-8 MAAC) dropped a road match to Canisius (6-9, 6-1 MAAC) in three sets (17-25, 17-25, 20-25) on Saturday at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Saint Peter's had a tough time on the offensive end as the Golden Griffins held the Peacocks to a low hitting percentage. The SPU front line recorded 10 blocks on the day.

The Peacocks are still searching for their first conference victory of the year as they shift their focus to Manhattan. After their matchup with the Jaspers, the Peacocks' remaining road games will be Iona, Quinnipiac and Merrimack. Saint Peter's has five home games left, including Rider, Canisius, Niagara, Marist and Siena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE:
In the opening set, Saint Peter's and Canisius traded points early to an 8-8 tie until the Griffs put together a scoring run. A pair of kills and forced errors extended their lead to 17-10 later in the set. Canisius continued to pile it on and eventually went up by nine, 23-14. Canisius held strong through the closing moments, winning the set, 25-17, after four straight points.

SET TWO: Early on, the set was tight with Saint Peter's taking a 4-3 lead. From there, Canisius turned things around, going on a run to build a 10-4 advantage. Although Saint Peter's managed to hang around, Canisius still led by three at 13-10. The Griffs then went on a scoring run to take a 19-11 lead over the Peacocks. Saint Peter's managed to make a run of its own, coming within four, 17-21, after a block by Danielle Caligiuri and Valeria Torres. Canisius took the set, 25-17, after four unanswered points again.

SET THREE: In the third and final set, Canisius built a 6-2 lead, but the Peacocks responded with a 6-0 run with two kills and forcing four attack errors. The Griffs eventually tied things up and then took a two-point lead. They held that two-point lead until kills by Sibana Gonzalez Acevedo and Karolina T. Rodriguez Mendez tied things up at 16-16. After the tie, Canisius rattled off six straight to a commanding, 23-17, lead. The Griffs won the set, 25-20, with a kill.
