WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team lost to Manhattan 66-62 in overtime Monday night at OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch, NJ. Graduate guard Kendrea Williams led the team in scoring with 19 points. She hit the game-tying three-pointer with nine seconds left to force overtime.
Junior center Kassondra Brown wasted no time in this contest. She scored nine points within the first five minutes to keep the score close. No other Peacock was able to get on the scoresheet until Williams hit two free throws at the 1:23 mark. She made a layup to tie the game up at 13 a short time later, and the score finished that way to finish the quarter.
Saint Peter's never trailed in the second quarter. Senior guard Nickelle O'Neil scored three straight points to open up the quarter, making a free throw and banking in a floater to put the Peacocks up three. Williams then followed that up with five straight points in under a minute to put the Peacocks up four. Senior guard Kourtney Crane drilled a long two-point jumper with nine seconds left in the half to put the Peacocks up seven. Saint Peter's led 30-23 at the break.
Monmouth jumped on the Peacocks off the rip in the third quarter. They went on a 12-4 run in the first half of the quarter to jump in front. Freshman forward Kaila Dawkins got going for the Peacocks in the third and kept the team in the game; scoring six of her ten in the quarter. Saint Peter's trailed by seven entering the fourth.
Saint Peter's cut the Monmouth lead to three to start the fourth, but the Hawks came down and hit two-straight threes to extend their lead to nine, forcing a timeout by SPU. The Peacocks trailed by as many as 11 in the quarter. Trailing by ten with under four minutes to go, the Peacocks got two big three point makes from Williams and O'Neil to cut the deficit to four. Dawkins converted a put-back with under a minute to go to make the score 58-56 Hawks. After one Monmouth free throw, the Peacocks came down with a chance to tie it. Williams got open on the left wing and banged the contested three with nine seconds left to tie the game and force overtime.
The Hawks scored 12 seconds into overtime and never relinquished the lead. Senior guard Kourtney Crane made two free throws in overtime and Brown added one. The Peacocks fell 66-62.
